South Greenland Uncovered - 8 Days

Keflavik/Copenhagen - Narsarsuaq. Take your included flight from either Keflavik or Copenhagen to Narsarsuaq, South Greenland. On arrival at the airport, we’ll transfer you to our hotel for check-in and a welcome meeting, where you’ll learn more about Greenland and our upcoming journey.

From here, we’ll set out on a hike to the Glacier Viewpoint, about an hour’s walk from the hotel, with breathtaking views over the Tunulliarfik fjord, the Narsarsuaq plain, and the Kiattuut Glacier.

Please note: Travel in Greenland depends on weather, fog, and ice conditions, so day tours and excursions may change, and alternatives will be offered when possible. Delays or cancellations between Iceland and Greenland can also occur. Comprehensive travel insurance is essential to cover unexpected expenses. To avoid missing international flights, plan to stay at least two nights in Iceland after your Greenland trip.

Narsarsuaq - Qaqortoq - Narsarsuaq. This morning, after breakfast, we’ll set off on one of South Greenland’s most renowned hikes: the Flower Valley. This stunning trail winds through a lush valley, offering spectacular views of the Kiattut River and glacier. As we walk, we’ll marvel at the valley’s vibrant flower displays, nourished by the unique glacial sediment deposited here over centuries as the glacier retreated. It’s a truly beautiful landscape, rich with natural beauty and contrasting colours. After taking in these incredible views, we’ll trek back to Narsarsuaq

Narsarsuaq - Narsaq. This morning, we’ll take a zodiac boat transfer from Narsarsuaq to Narsaq, enjoying the stunning landscape along the way, with views of isolated farms and cascading waterfalls. With around 1,500 residents, Narsaq is the third-largest town in South Greenland.

Once we arrive, we’ll set off on a city tour to explore Narsaq’s colourful buildings, visiting the local market, fur shops, and the hunters' harbour. Next, we’ll begin an easy hike through the scenic surroundings, taking in views of the valley, fjords, and mountains, as well as one of Greenland’s few cattle farms and the site of an old mine.

In the afternoon, you’ll have free time to wander the city at your leisure, surrounded by awe-inspiring landscapes. You may wish to visit the Greenlandic Museum, enjoy a drink with locals, or experience the way of life of modern Inuit residents.

Narsag - Qaleraliq - Narsaq. In the morning, we’ll head to Qaleraliq camp near Greenland’s vast Ice Cap. Our cosy camp, set on a sandy beach, offers a remarkable view of the three impressive glacier fronts of Qaleraliq Glacier, creating a stunning natural contrast.

We’ll journey along the glacier fronts in a RIB boat, admiring the dramatic vertical ice walls and vast icebergs as we approach the glacier’s 10km descent to the sea. Once a single glacier front, it has now divided into three separate tongues due to the effects of climate change.

Our expert mountain guide will ensure we’re equipped and safe throughout the trek, sharing insights into the unique features of South Greenland’s glaciers. This remarkable experience is both thrilling and memorable, impressing first-timers and seasoned explorers alike, a true highlight of Greenland.

From there, we’ll embark on an unforgettable ice trek. Outfitted with crampons for stability, we’ll walk across one of the world’s oldest ice masses, exploring its deep crevasses, meltwater streams, towering seracs, and unique ice formation, a fascinating, maze-like world of ancient ice. We’ll enjoy a picnic lunch on the ice or back at camp, depending on the conditions.

In the afternoon, we’ll transfer by zodiac boat to Narsaq, passing enormous icebergs calving off the Eqaloruutsit Glacier and floating through the Sermilik Fjord. At times, these icebergs can block access to the ports of Narsaq.

Narsag - Hvalsey - Qaqortoq - Narsaq. We’ll set off on an exciting high-powered zodiac tour from Narsaq to Hvalsoy, a journey of about an hour and a half. As we navigate through icebergs and gorges, we’ll enjoy views of small islands that add to the area’s magical landscape. Hvalsoy Church, built in the 14th century, is the best-preserved church from that era, and people once travelled long distances to attend Christian events here. The area has recently been recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

After this fascinating experience, we’ll arrive in the picturesque city of Qaqortoq for a guided tour. Founded in 1775, Qaqortoq is southern Greenland’s capital and is known for its charming, colourful houses, which are perched on a mountain at the edge of the sea. The town centre, leading to the large fishing port, is filled with early 20th-century buildings, some of which have been transformed into restaurants. Qaqortoq is also home to Greenland's only fountain.

From here, we’ll follow a scenic path through the city, taking in stunning views of the fjord and mountains, while admiring a collection of thirty large stones carved by local artisans, each depicting motifs from Inuit culture. You can also explore the wooden church by the river, visit craft shops, the fish market, or the traditional kayak club. In the afternoon, we’ll return to Narsaq by zodiac boat.

Narsag - Igaliku - Narsarsuaq. In the morning, we’ll enjoy the breathtaking views of Einarsfjord, a unique fjord in Greenland that, unlike many others, is not characterised by massive icebergs. Instead, its green hills offer a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere.

After our hike back to Itilleq, we’ll embark on a boat trip to the Qooroq Fjord, home to one of the most active and spectacular glaciers in South Greenland. As we navigate through the ice-filled waters, the density of ice will increase, creating a stunning and chaotic ice spectacle. We’ll then resume our journey by zodiac boat to Narsarsuaq, where we’ll transfer by car to Hotel Narsarsuaq.

Narsarsuaq - Qassiarsuk - Narsarsuaq. In the morning, we’ll embark on a 4×4 jeep trip to the scenic Tasiusaq farm, where just seven people live in isolation beside the Sermilik Fjord, often blocked by icebergs drifting from the Eqaloruutsit Glacier.

After a picnic at the farm, we’ll transfer by RIB boat through the beautiful Tunulliarfik Fjord to Qassiarsuk.

There, we’ll explore the ruins of an ancient church and the historic settlement of Erik the Red, who made this area his home in 985, making it the capital of Viking Greenland. As we walk through the small village of around 50 inhabitants, mostly farmers, we’ll visit the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Kujataa Greenland region. This area showcases a rich history of Norse and Greenlandic farming, with ruins of large cattle farms and satellite sites, including Erik the Red’s Brattahlid. It was also here that Otto Frederiksen established Greenland’s first sheep farm in 1924, which led to the founding of the modern settlement of Qassiarsuk.

Later, you will have the opportunity to join an optional kayak excursion in the "Iceberg Bay", a 2-hour sea kayaking trip suitable for beginners, where you can paddle among icebergs and ice in one of Greenland’s safest and most scenic locations.

We will journey back by jeep to Qassiarsuk before transferring by zodiac boat to Narsarsuaq.

Narsarsuaq - Keflavik/Copenhagen. You will have free time to capture some final photos and enjoy a leisurely walk around Narsarsuaq. We suggest you visit the Blue West Museum, where you can learn about the town's history, especially its important role during the Second World War.

Afterwards, you will depart on your included return flight from Narsarsuaq to Keflavik International Airport in Iceland or Copenhagen in Denmark.
